TermCymru is an English-Welsh terminology database created and maintained by the Welsh Government Translation Service. It is a collection of terms used by Welsh Government translators in their everyday work. It is continually updated with a view to providing an increasingly comprehensive database of terminology which reflects current usage in the various fields of the Government's operation. It also includes the names of Welsh Government initiatives and programmes, and the titles of many documents published by the Welsh Government and other bodies.
TermCymru is a database of over 55,000 pairs of English-Welsh terms (December 2014) and it can be searched in Welsh or in English. Parts of speech are given for the Welsh terms only.
Each entry has been given a status denoting its stage in the standardisation process: a Status 1 term has been fully standardised but a Status 5 term will not have been through the standardisation process. After a term has been discussed and standardised, the status is raised. It is important to consider the status of a term before using it.
Context is important when choosing the most appropriate term for a particular circumstance. Some English-language terms in TermCymru have more than one entry in the database. Occasionally one English-language term will have two or three Welsh-language equivalents, for use in different contexts. Where different terms are required for different contexts, an explanation is given in the ‘Context” or 'Notes' box.
